Nerd Life 101: Live Long and Geek Out

Facilitator: Christy Smith

On hold due to COVID-19

Sure, you've got a great grip on Ohm's Law and SMART goals, but what do you know about Leroy Jenkins? You know about HIPPA and the IRS, but what about HVZ, LARP, MMORPG, or WOW? Do the words 'geronimo' or 'shiny' ever come up in conversation, and leave you feeling like you missed something?

Resistance is futile at a tech college. The nerds are unavoidable, and it's time to come to the dark side. We have pi.

In this PDC we will be looking at the big picture, trying to establish a basic foundation for the neophytes. Each week the main topic will be discussed (think Gaming, Anime/Manga, Fantasy/Sci-Fi books and movies & TV). The presenters will provide a general framework of facts and information about major topics that are frequently discussed or referenced in the unique learning environment that is found in the academic environment. Participants will engage in discussion and be able to demonstrate a basic knowledge of the wide range of topics to which they are exposed.  The overarching goal is for interpreters to be able to apply this broadened awareness to their interpreting work. Participants will report weekly to the group when topics and information are encountered in their classes/assignments directly or indirectly and how their heightened awareness impacted their work.

Get ready to open the curiosity door!

Educational Objectives

Throughout the course of this PDC, participants will:

  • Learn about several facets of Geek/Nerd culture frequently encountered by Access Services in the RIT community

  • Study at least one of these areas in-depth and share with the group

  • Participate in weekly discussions with colleagues

  • Demonstrate cursory knowledge of a wide range of topics to which they are introduced

  • Report to the group when related information is encountered in assignments
